Why put art on a bridge? Karluv Most, sculptures and Lennon wall

So many things has happened since the last time I wrote a post. I joined three trips in various places of the Czech Republic hosted by the international student club and have been going on my own trips, socializing and etc. that I have simply skipped writing for a few weeks. So as I am on a train now from Bratislava to the High Tatras, I will continue where I left off last time.

Karluv Most- Charles in English, is built and named after the Bohemian King that built it, namely Charles IV He was the king of Holy Roman Empire, and relocated the capital of the empire to Prague. Before this bridge, there was a wooden one crossing the Vltava, but it burnt down. One characteristic of this bridge is the thirty sculptures lining both sides of the bridge and a very picturesque view of Prague castle.

Lennon wall

I think everyone knows John Lennon from the Beatles. But why call a wall “Lennon wall”? From what I have heard, It is because during the Communist oppressive rule, youngsters secretly graffitied a picture of him on a wall as a sign of protest against the regime. Since then, the wall was known as Lennon’s wall. Unfortunately, we are unable to see this portrait of him because this wall was graffitied over and over again. But, it is possible to see small details and lyrics from the Beatles and hidden messages by lovers everywhere.
